Three Types of Education

For many, school officially begins tomorrow.

Still others went back last week.

And…

there are a few…

that won’t begin until after Labor Day.

This time of year…

there are always discussions…

regarding the when…

the where…

and even the why.

For those…

that have chosen to home educate…

the latter generally comes up a lot!

Regardless…

of your personal preference or choice…

historically speaking…

there are three types of education.

Our family gets asked…

yet another question…

quite frequently.

Why specifically Leadership Education?

In reality…

it is a great question…

and one that we will be looking at…

here on TommyMom this week.

Let me clarify…

and reinforce…

that I am not here…

to debate good, better and best.

I believe that parents…

have a God-given right…

to determine what is most appropriate…

for their family.

I want to honor that…

where every family is concerned.

That being said…

knowing the types of education…

brings about greater understanding…

when looking at methods…

intent…

and outcomes.

I know for me…

it is always beneficial…

to review.

1.  Public Education~ when introduced into a society, immediately raises literacy and standard of living.  It is great when it is one of three options of education within that society.  It has been readily available since the 1920′s; becoming extremely prominent with the Industrial Revolution.  This method shoots for educating the masses in the most efficient and broadest of ways. It is geared to making certain that everyone is capable of getting a job.  It loses its effectiveness as leadership wanes within society.

2.  Professional Education~ serves the purpose of educating and training to a specific job; teaching when, what, and how to think.  It generally requires a 4-5 year minimum for specialization and specific skills.  These objectives are acquired through case studies and associating/socializing with people in your professional culture.  You become deep in a few things.  It is a very competitive model, also using the “conveyor belt” methodology; aiming at the 95-93 percentile.  When completed; it produces specialized jobs and professions.

3.  Leadership Education~encourages an individual to know how to think.  The “curriculum” is the study of classics ( works that are worth studying over and over again, because you continue to learn), and works ( meaning things other than books such as plays, a piece of architecture or art, etc.)  Both the professional and leadership models have always existed in societies. Leadership Education believes in mentors; who encourage and guide you based on your strengths, your weaknesses, your passions; knowing that you must also fill in with things that you don’t necessarily “like!”

Leadership Education understands that it is the student’s responsibility to educate themselves.  They are trained deeply in many varied areas.  This type of education recognizes and embraces these facts: a.  You can not teach anyone.  b.  You can only inspire. c.  Great education occurs when you have great mentors.

When we talk about education in our country today; we tend to really be talking about jobs.

It is, again, up to each and every parent to decide what type of education is right for their children.

All of these systems socialize.  They just socialize differently.

These past weekend…

Sons #1-#5…

in celebration of some birthdays…

coupled with Son #1′s relocation…

took surfing lessons.

The analogies…

that presented themselves…

during this pursuit…

were simply too good to pass up!

So…

Wednesday and Friday…

will be spent examining principles…

of Leadership Education…

using these surfing parallels…

in hopes of helping those…

that have expressed intense desire…

to better understand and implement them…

experience even greater success.

Until then…

my deepest thanks and gratitude…

to both …

Drs. Oliver DeMille and Shanon Brooks…

for helping countless people…

through the sharing of these principles…

to lessen the leadership vacuum…

that exists today…

in hopes of perpetuating freedom…

for future generations.
