I’ve been asked…
several times lately…
if I school year round…
take conventional breaks…
“make” my kids do things…
such and such a way…
etc., etc., etc.
I’d like to tell you…
that I give this…
tremendous thought.
While in some ways…
I truly do…
I have worked…
to blur the lines…
between school and life…
as much as possible.
Because…
in my never-to-be-perfect mind…
they are one and the same.
It’s worked so far…
and I can be really “ruttish”…
regarding change.
Yes…
I am aware…
that I just made up…
a word.
I’ve been invited…
to blog…
about raising boys…
in a couple of weeks…
on a lovely friend’s site.
More on that later.
In keeping somewhat…
with that thought…
here is a quick point…
that I do believe…
I pretty much have down…
at this particular…
stage of the game.
Boys need excitement…
sensationalism…
danger…
and if possible…
loud noise…
bordering upon…
illegal explosion.
While in Seattle…
I got this book.
Glancing at the title…
and graphics alone…
I knew I had a winner!
Because I have 5 boys…
just in case you’ve forgotten.
This book…
even sports a warning…
that perhaps…
you shouldn’t try…
many of the experiments listed…
without an adult’s supervision!
Words like…
rocket…
catapult…
Frankenstein…
burning ice…
are all present…
within this gem!
We decided…
to ease into…
these adventures…
by starting…
with this beauty.
The step by step…
directions…
complete with interesting graphics…
were right there to behold!
And…
we had just…
eaten chicken for dinner…
the previous evening!
I love it when…
a plan comes together!
( Minus most of the planning!)
First things first!..
In case someone…
“accidentally” mistakes…
the vitamin C container…
filled with chicken bones…
for vitamin C…
we took the time…
to label responsibly.
Whew!
Next…
we added…
“the secret ingredient”…
which isn’t so secret.
It’s vinegar.
And…
at the end…
of three very long days…
(at least in the minds of two little boys)…
we have…
rubber chicken bones!
While Son #3…
went on…
and on…
and on some more…
about how disgusting…
and nauseating…
this was.
A career in medicine…
has been eliminated.
The book…
also explains…
very clearly…
what has transpired…
and why…
for each of the experiments.
Yes…
some of them…
are going out on a limb…
in assuming…
that you will…
indeed survive…
without injury…
and be able…
to draw said conclusions!
As you can now clearly see…
some of you…
are giving us…
far too much credit…
over here…
for being…
polished.
What we do…
have down fairly well…
is this.
“The most powerful lessons occur where studies intersect with real life. ” ~ Oliver DeMille, A Thomas Jefferson Education, page 54.
