Freedom…to let “people think what they think”…and WHAWW!

christmas-present

There are TWO lucky winners of the Christmas Flag Albums:  Joelle Mancuso and Cherylyn Klemens

Congratulations, ladies!

As promised, wasn’t that an amazing piece by Dr. Brooks?!

I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as I did…

Feel free to refer back to it often!

I’m almost certain by now…

that many of you faithful readers are wondering

what a “Snuggie” has to do with Freedom vs. Liberty?

Snuggie #2

(And where the nearest facility is that will take TommyMom for a “nice long rest?”)

It has a lot to do with it, actually.

It’s a strong illustration…

Especially in matters that involve…

those that are developing their leadership skills…

And what we are modeling for them as mentors.

I am not a “Snuggie hater.”

Or a hater of much of anything, really …

So don’t get your toga in a knot.

If you refer back to the Snuggie post and look at what it claims…

It is not only over the top…

It’s ridiculous…

With totally irrelevant claims that don’t address its true purpose!

A phenomena?!

Please.

Webster’s 1828 has a simple example of phenomenon…

“something remarkable.”

While blankets serve a useful purpose, I wouldn’t categorize them as “phenomena.”

And yet, how many times do we intentionally or even unintentionally,

jump on the bandwagon of the latest useful system, methodology, technique, or gadget…

that promises a “quick fix”…

where Leadership Education and our goals are concerned…

Especially if “everyone else has one” or “is doing it”…

with results that are perceived as successful…

but more often than not, are irrelevant to our personal needs and goals?

True Leadership Education is a lifetime pursuit, not a means to an end.

It is something that is cultivated.

I think “Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning” says it best…

“Women, in particular, tend to think that if we just talk to the right person or meet with the right circle of friends, somebody will give us that secret knowledge that makes everything ideal…It is imperative to rise to the level of adult and be the expert on your own life.” page 259, emphasis mine.

This is not a “Snuggie” realization to face…

And it definitely doesn’t produce “warm fuzzies…

complete with relaxing comfort zones.”

Facing it involves a huge paradigm shift…

and the discipline…

coupled with will…

to not default to a conveyor belt mentality.

An example?…

sans “Snuggie” illustrations?

“Wow, such and such a child who is my child’s age can already do_______…”

This must mean that I need ________________

in order to succeed as a mentor to my child as well.”

Or…

“Wow, she has achieved_______

(in her home, her education, her goals)

…you choose.

Never mind that the reality is…

that your life circumstances are entirely different

with a different number of children…

all of whom have individual needs!

And when you diligently apply…

the 4 Phases and the 7 Keys to your situation…

it works every time.

Alright, ladies!…

(and gentleman...the example is gender specific, but the situation certainly isn’t)…

“Confession is good for the soul.”…

As is personal assessment.

I think that all of us are born with a desire to be affirmed…

to make a difference in the world…

to matter.

On a meaningful level.

But in thinking seriously about it…

If we don’t reprogram the default button…

We remain slaves to expectations both culturally and socially.

Leadership thrives in an environment of freedom.

Cultivating freedom at the cost of slavery…

is always going to be worth it.

This means, that “trusting the process”,

valuing what we know to be right over what others think, have or do…

Allows a strengthening of our core being,

the whole individual…

and a cultivation of confidence that allows “people to think what they think”…

and “do what they do,”

regardless of what we, ourselves, are modeling and living.

Perhaps it takes a large part of a lifetime to become totally unfettered

but how often do we end up with less than desirable results…

because we do what the masses are doing?

Each day brings an opportunity to practice freedom…

Leadership…

Education…

None of which, historically, have successfully involved the masses

warm, fuzzy feelings…

or personal comfort.

The trade off?

No mental or spiritual limitations…

regardless of personal circumstances…

personal choice of thought and self-governance…

often coupled with effective action.

And in this case, children that most likely, will choose the same.

How is your default response coming along?

Let Freedom Ring...

And now, a word from one of our mentors…

Dr. Shanon Brooks will be returning to So. California Jan. 17-23 for a follow up to his previous TJEd 1,000,000 Tour in November.  This website will provide up-to-date scheduling and venue information.  He will also be a presenter at the FATJEF in Rancho Cucamonga, California on April 24, 2010.

Freedom versus Liberty

Dr. Shanon Brooks

GW-0156

I recently read The Long Walk to Freedom: the autobiography of Nelson Mandela. He discusses at length the distinction between freedom and liberty. Victor Frankl talked a lot about these differences in his book Man’s Search for Meaning.  And of course, this topic has been discussed in great measure by such luminaries as C.S. Lewis, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Benito Juarez among others.

Even non-political writers, thinkers and doers have touched on this subject; consider the words of Dave Ramsey, Joel Salatin, William George Jordan, Suze Orman, James Allen, Gloria de Souza and Ryan Hreljac.

Liberty is a political state of being; freedom is an internal state of mind. To people who live in relative liberty, freedom can be a difficult concept. I recall somewhere in the hundreds of pages of his autobiography and numerous speeches, where Mandela suggests that even though South Africa may someday become a nation founded on liberty; true freedom comes from the mind and the heart. Frankl alluded to the same thing, when he related his story of life and death in a German concentration camp. A study of Mandela’s life is a lesson in living by a set of principles, understanding the brutal facts around you and then working to enlarge your personal freedom thru discipline and an adherence to truth. This is referred to as the Stockdale Paradox by Jim Collins referring to the story of James Stockdale in his book, In Love and War.

Liberty is an uncommon condition in world history. On the other hand, freedom has been as prevalent as the number of people who could see it and who had the will, knowledge and discipline to strive for it.

Today we have a very unique situation.  Usually the struggle for freedom is outlined as a group that is suffering and has had their rights and liberties usurped and are now fighting back to regain them.  The American situation is unique in that we have more freedoms—even now—than most citizens of any country on earth, but because of our lack of comprehension and daily discipline, we are on the verge of not only losing those liberties but also of losing the means of regaining or even maintaining that liberty.

We have ceased to think and act as a free people.

Free citizens live within their means, financially save for the future and are self-sufficient. Slaves must have most things done for them.

Free citizens look inward for solutions.  Servants seek solutions from employers, the government or other sources outside of themselves.

Free citizens understand that society needs them to step-up and do their part.  Subjects take little initiative and must be directed in all things.

100 years ago, Yankee Ingenuity and the American Dream were the stuff of legends. People flocked to this country at great sacrifice, not to join the ranks of welfare, but to live in a land of liberty and provide their children with a greater chance of experiencing freedom on a daily basis.  In many cases, they had already mastered the “live-within-your-means thing,” they knew how to work hard and they adhered to a strict culture of self-discipline and morality.  What they lacked in the “old world” was an environment of liberty in which freedom was the natural result of their chosen lifestyle and cultural mores. (customs)

We seem to have the latter but fall short of the former.  Until we, the America people regain our sense of disciplined direction; until we grasp the reality of the brutal facts; until we re-embrace the concept of delayed gratification—we will likely not see much improvement and I can almost predict that our grandchildren will not understand nor enjoy the bastion of freedom in which we currently live.

Actions have consequences.

“Snuggies”, “Slavery” and a Happy New Year!…

Let me say it again…Happy New Year!

I hope that you are happy…

celebrating with family and friends…

while you bond with “Bob and Stephanie” on HGTV

watching the Rose Parade.

As an aside, look for this kid…

n1009031541_20541_2131

he won’t be hard to spot.

Relatively speaking, that is…

He’s in the above pictured outfit…

along with “several other of his closest friends.”

But he is in the first coronet position this year, which is always on TV.”

Not that I haven’t seen him in this parade, on TV…

alot.

But I probably don’t get out enough…

So this is exciting for me.

Every year…

What’s more exciting, is that he’s my darling nephew, Nick…

An extremely stellar young man…

Of which his uncle, “Hero Hubby” and I can be proud.

And let me make one thing perfectly clear…

You don’t get the first coronet spot…

in The Salvation Army Band

by “tooting” out “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”

Nick would be mortified to learn that I had highlighted him in this  particular fashion…

Because he’s humble to boot.

So here is your “3 Minutes of Fame,” Nick…

I would’ve liked to make it a full 15, but…

You are on TV ( over and over in a continuous loop if it’s HGTV)…

and, I’m concerned about the state of our nation…

and need to address some things…

Dr. Shanon Brooks has written a thought provoking piece for TommyMom

because he’s fairly nice like that.

It will be featured next week…

when we get back down to business…

and nix the “perpetual party” that’s been going on here…

pretty much since the inception of this blog in  October.

(Hey, it was the holidays

what’s a girl supposed to do?!)

I do have a New Year’s Resolution, however…

(there are several…I’m actually naming the one…)

I think that next year, I’ll take a couple of weeks off.

Because we went from “Chatty Cathy Forum”…

to “Hello, I’m Standing at an Open Mike, Is Anyone In Here?”…

“Can You Come Out and Play?”

I don’t like this much “alone” time.

So when you leave next year to cleave to family and friends…

So will I.

Back to the infamous nearly famous Dr. Brooks.

I can’t wait for you to read the article…

And then refer back to this.

Snuggie #3

Okay…I’m somewhat interested…

(After all I do want to “fit in.”)

Snuggie #1

4 Million people bought tag line #1 in “just 3 months”?!?

If you got one for Christmas or Hanukkah, please forgive me

I am struggling to understand “the phenomena.”

Snuggie #2

Apparently these two people do.

(…Is that a classic she’s reading?)

But wait, “the phenomena” gets better!…

Snuggie #4

Traveling in the car?!

WHAT?  absolutely NO OPTIONS other than steering wheel positions “10 and 2″ in this baby! NO “heel of the one hand swing” like your dad used to do…no siree! And what about road trip rest stops!?!?

What IS a “Night Time Pub Crawl!?!”

I’m going to ask my friends Cherylyn and Dave…

They claim to have participated in everything in their misguided high school years!

If you yourself, are familiar with this activity…

feel free to leave me a comment.

Because I’m open to new and exciting things…

and like to understand where others are coming from…

most of the time.

Chilly Office BuildingsWhere, and for Whom do you work? If you answer anyone other than yourself while sporting this baby, then I suggest you seriously check out the long-term viability of this company…and its 401K!

“Sporting Events” We’ll see you on the news as a victim, is all I can say…

“Cold Movie Theatres” Looking for an entire row to yourself?  This could be the ticket!

“And Much, Much, More!”

People! For the love of God and country!…

Can you tell me, after seeing this…

Why people who choose to educate their children at home or through “alternative” methods…

are labeled “freaks” in this nation?

And why ditching a harlequin romance novel for a classic labels you as “odd?”

And can you imagine…

what the ramifications of 4 million people “buying into”…

and practicing TJEd ( Leadership Education) principles would DO for this ailing country?!?

I, for one, think that Snuggies should come in bubble gum pink

You should get one, then glue an old tennis shoe to your head…

WAH-LAH!

We’re back to October!…Happy Halloween!

(and it’s a stellar costume suggestion, since a girl in Washington state won “Best Costume” at her local high school for doing just this!)

Do you see how The Four Turnings really do come full cycle?!?

Oh, there’s more alright…much, much more!
