” ‘Til the Season Comes ‘Round Again “

I am tremendously blessed

but tired.

And I think…

I’ve consumed enough sugar…

to keep my insulin levels…

from testing normal…

until mid-March!

In many ways…

it is hard…

to let another year go.

You get…

into a groove, you know?

And things change.

A lot of the time…

I’m not certain I like that.

But nevertheless…

here we are…

on the brink of the unknown.

Embracing a “fresh start”…

a “clean slate”…

exciting opportunities.

I hope…

that this year…

saw many wonderful things…

for each of you.

I trust…

that you were tested just enough…

to come out…

the better for it.

That your holidays…

have been rich…

and beautiful…

in many ways.

I love the song…

whose lyrics I share here.

It’s time to savor…

the final moments…

of the holidays…

and to look ahead…

to 2011…

with anticipation…

excitement…

and joy.

I’ll see you next year…

and look forward…

to our continued fellowship.

‘Til the Season Comes ‘Round Again ~ sung by Amy Grant and Vince Gill

Come and gather around at the table

In the spirit of family and friends

And we’ll all join hands and remember this moment

‘Til the season comes ’round again

Let’s all try to smile for the picture

And we’ll hold it as long as we can

May it carry us through

Should we ever get lonely

‘Til the season comes ’round again

CHORUS
One night holy and bright

Shining with love from our hearts

By a warm fire,

Let’s lift our heads high

And be thankful we’re here

‘Til this time next year

May the new year be blessed

With good tidings

‘Til the next time I see you again

If we must say goodbye

Let the spirit go with you

‘Til the season comes ’round again

CHORUS

May the new year be blessed with good tidings

‘Til the next time I see you again

If we must say goodbye

Let the spirit go with you

And we’ll love and we’ll laugh

In the time that we had

‘Til the season comes ’round again

A Healthy Resolve

As I sit typing this post…

it is fast approaching midnight.

The 29th…

which is now today…

is nearly upon us.

In the living room…

we have several individuals…

attempting to duplicate…

the Beatles “Eight Days A Week”…

and it’s definitely not working.

There is lots of laughter…

and memories…

are being woven…

into the fabric…

of what would normally…

be “just every day life.”

Uncle Tim…

is here for a few days.

This spells one word.

F-U-N.

We had planned…

to visit…

the happiest place on earth…

today.

However…

3,759,210…

of our closest friends…

have also…

gotten that idea…

this week!

And…

to top it off…

it’s raining…

in Southern California.

The adjective…

used to describe…

the forecast…

was “torrential.”

So…

we’ll go to Los Angeles…

check out “touristy things”…

and make some more memories…

that may need to dry out a bit!

It is my hope…

that you have experienced joy…

laughter…

and enriched family times…

this holiday season.

The passing of Christmas…

has pushed the ending of 2010…

to the forefront.

We’re hearing…

the use of the words…

resolve…

and resolution..

quite a lot.

There are only…

three days left…

in this year.

A Resolution…

is…

“The act, operation or process of separating the parts which compose a complex idea or a mixed body; the act of reducing any compound or combination to its component parts; analysis; as the resolution of complex ideas…” ~ Webster’s 1828

The word Resolve…

means…

“To separate the component parts of a compound substance; to reduce to first principles…” ~Webster’s 1828

I love these definitions.

I think where…

my family…

my life…

my choices…

are concerned…

they are adequate…

and accurate!

Please…

when thinking through…

your resolve…

and resolution…

for 2011…

remember…

to be simple…

realistic…

and kind.

To yourself…

and others.

Life…

circumstances…

and choices…

can be complicated…

and complex.

The principles…

of Leadership Education…

are clear…

simple…

and organic.

When they are allowed…

to remain in these forms…

they are most effective.

When the expectations…

hopes…

and demands…

of a New Year…

reach a volume…

that can sometimes be deafening…

and are full of complexity…

that often overwhelms…

I hope you will..

“separate the parts which compose a complex idea”…

and…

“reduce to first principles.”

See you Friday,
TeriSig

He Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way

“Drops that gather one by one finally become a sea.” ~ Persian Proverb

“And here is how to measure it — the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends.” ~ John 15:13, New Living Translation

I have a son…

that is physically…

and emotionally…

spent.

And…

he wouldn’t have it any other way.

I have a son…

that has been privileged…

to spear head something great…

even though…

it wasn’t convenient.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

I have a son…

that has experienced…

being the drop…

that recruits others…

until each one…

becomes part of a sea.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

I have a son…

that has experienced…

unspeakable joy…

intense sorrow…

and tremendous pleasure…

because people chose to respond.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

I have a son…

that has practiced humility…

grace…

unconditional love…

and the laying down…

of his life…

for the sake…

of intense…

strong…

solid…

servant-based leadership.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here is the latest video update.

Until Wednesday,

Merry Christmas…with a Modern Day Twist!

Merry Christmas to each and every one of you!

I really enjoyed this short video…

that tells the Christmas story…

through social media.

It is my hope and prayer…

that each of you has a blessed day…

filled with joy…

hope…

peace…

family…

and friends.

Love,
TeriSig

An Interesting and Incredible Day!

“God doesn’t call us to be comfortable.  He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn’t come through.” ~ Francis Chan

Let me begin by saying…

that we…

at the Helms house…

are fully aware…

of the fact…

that Christmas…

will be here…

in three days.

We are…

way behind…

where preparations…

as defined by American culture…

are concerned.

And yet…

we are having…

the time of our lives!

I think it’s because…

we’re laying them down…

for someone else.

And that act…

delivers joy..

that is unspeakable!

As you read this…

the Blood Drive…

is under way.

We are attending it…

so that we…

can personally thank…

every individual…

that has committed to come.

And there are quite a lot…

from what we can gather.

It is overwhelming…

inconvenient…

and exhilarating!

Below is the clip…

of our experience…

on our local CBS news.

I understand…

that this is a tough topic…

during “the holidays.”

Imagine how tough…

“the holidays”…

are for the Parkins!

That being said…

know that…

together…

we can…

and do make a difference!

Even when…

we have only connected…

at the most basic…

of human needs.

I will post…

the report…

and photos…

of this drive…

next Monday…

along with any updates.

Friday’s blog…

will be dedicated…

to Christmas.

In closing…

I would like to bring…

a smidge of levity…

to this experience…

you’re about to see.

It is titled…

“Things I Learned…About Being on TV.”

1.  Humans that thrive on no sleep, adrenaline, caffeine, and all things done quickly…choose careers in media.

2.  Perhaps I have found the root source of all ADD/ADHD beginnings, middles and ends.

3.  You know those simulation experiences that Leadership Education encourages?

This would be one of those times…

you either wished you’d practiced this particular one…

or that guarantees you will in the future.

Over and over again.

4.  Go ahead and curl your hair in an attempt to look decent.  You will be locked outside of a security door in the rain…that no one answers.

5.  There is virtually no prep time other than Hello, run this mike up your shirt, please… Look at this camera, Follow their scripting, Wait for the questions and What are your names again, please?…And BOOM!  You’re live!

6.  If an actual television set makes you look 10 pounds heavier…what does a screen the size of a one acre plot do?! We’ll have more opportunities tomorrow when they show up on site to explore this particular thought!

7.  That when you sit next to a kid that’s leading a community movement…and a man that’s become like family in the past week…

and family at home taping and watching…while cheering you on…

you realize you have everything you need…and are privileged and blessed to be along for the ride.

8.  People do care about others. They want to help.  They move heaven and earth in their world to do so.

That…”Drops that gather one by one, finally become a sea.” ( Persian Proverb)

The momentum is mind-boggling right now…

the emotion high…

the gratitude immense.

Thank you.

For reading.

For praying.

For donating.

We love you…

and are extremely grateful…

that God came through.

It’s going to be exciting…

to see what He does tomorrow!
TeriSig

Interest…or Commitment?

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment.  When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient.  When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.” ~ Unknown

There are real trends…

that exist within society today…

applauding interest…

but shunning commitment.

Sadly…

in the absence of commitment

countless things suffer.

One of those things…

is our sense of responsibility…

to community.

You know…

that society of people…

having common rights…

and privileges…

or common interests…

civil…

political…

and ecclesiastical…

living under…

the same laws…

and regulations?

(Thank you Daniel Webster).

At times…

our desire for interests…

and all things interesting…

leaves commitment…

in the dust.

I know at times…

I’m guilty.

Will you please invest…

in watching…

this nearly three minute video…

on behalf of my Son…

and the infant…

that he is assisting?

If you will wait…

at the end…

it gives you…

further information…

on how to act.

Yes…

he’s a great young man.

Yes…

I have watched him…

faithfully donate…

on a consistent basis…

while others…

chose different priorities.

At times…

I, too…

was among the others.

The fact is…

real …

genuine leadership…

rarely equals…

the convenient.

Now…

when someone…

within the community…

of parents…

children…

families…

noteworthy individuals…

doing and speaking…

powerful things…

needs help…

Son #2…

is in a lime-light of sorts.

But…

as is the case with all things…

it will be temporary.

What really matters…

is that we choose

commitment.

And that when…

the opportunity arises…

within the mundane…

common…

and anonymous…

we practice it.

Anyone can write a book.

Many can communicate eloquently.

But when it all comes down…

if there’s anything good…

that produces results…

it’s because people…

listened…

heeded…

and then acted upon

the information given.

Welcome to real

authentic leadership.

Welcome to the power of community.

The blood drive for Samuel Parkins is presently under way, and will last until Jan. 2nd. You may simply state at LifeStream or any mobile LifeStream unit, that you are designating your blood products for the Parkin’s baby.  You may follow his progress by clicking on these words.

Things of Beauty

Good grief!…

Leave the children for one day…

and I was apparently…

fortunate to retain…

face recognition!

Some of you…

caught me…

on my error.

Son #3…

was born in April.

The diamond birthstone month.

And boy…

does he milk

that particular fact!

He’s a “diamond in the rough.”

“Nothing can break diamonds.”

“He may look like coal now…”

Suffice it to say…

we’ve heard it all.

It is Son #2…

that shares…

a December birthday…

with #1 and myself.

Son #2…

very dryly…

also pointed out…

that apparently…

I used “his number”…

when attempting…

to discuss…

#3′s ADHD…

in some bygone post…

as well.

Sigh.

Like I said…

they’re lucky…

I remember…

what they look like.

Several readers…

would also…

like to know…

where the McCharles House…

is specifically located.

It’s at 335 C Street…

Tustin, CA 92780.

The phone number…

because I aim to please…

is (714) 731-4063.

Merry Christmas…

Happy Holidays…

have fun.

If you decide…

to go…

that is.

In keeping…

with the “theme”…

of rejuvenation…

relaxation…

rest…

and beauty…

I want to share…

with you all…

where the “next stop”…

was…

during this special day.

The remainder…

of today’s post…

is dedicated to Lynn…

and Symbria Patterson.

Together…

they bring…

extraordinary beauty…

to the world.

Imagine my shock…

when Symbria confessed…

that they have never been to…

Roger’s Gardens.

Roger’s Gardens…

is located in Corona Del Mar…

across from this place.

Fashion Island.

One of the most…

incredible…

outdoor malls…

you could ever possibly see…

in your lifetime.

It’s less than a mile…

from Pacific Coast Highway…

which runs parallel…

to the ocean…

forever.

Suffice it to say…

that you will not see…

a Wal-Mart…

or Target…

for miles.

This trellis…

greeted us at the entrance.

Amazing, huh?

Everything about this place…

exudes beauty…

class…

and eye candy!

Allow me to share.

Please do not mistake this…

for my dining room table.

I know that it would be easy to do…

which is why I took the time to clarify.

Every nook and cranny…

of seven acres…

is rich in all things beautiful…

unusual…

even eccentric.

bear in mind…

that, above…

you’re looking…

at a $1,150.00…

photo frame!

One false move…

with a basketball…

in the living room…

and that baby…

is definitely back…

to the pumpkin state!

I thought the statue…

was especially apropos…

for the in-home library.

Sort of…

a subliminal suggestion.

They literally…

have everything…

one could ever want…

and plenty that…

practical folks…

quite possibly don’t!

Allow me…

to share…

some of their…

tree decorating…

options.

I’m thinking…

that quite possibly…

next year…

I’ll get the family…

dressed up…

and take…

a Christmas card photo…

in front of one of these babies!

It would definitely…

serve to dispel…

the current stereo-types…

that surround…

home educating families!

What do you think?

One…

of the signature things…

about Roger’s…

are the two rooms

full of Christopher Radko ornaments.

Here is a portion

of one wall.

These ornaments…

are the bona fide…

Old World…

mercury version.

Christopher…

is simply amazing.

But that’s a story…

for another time.

Each of these babies…

are mercury dipped..

three times…

then hand painted…

then strategically rolled…

in crushed Swarovski crystals.

They are breathtaking in the light.

And equally so in price.

I must confess here…

that I have collected them…

for years.

And they are safely stored

because we have a kitten.

He would like to live…

to see the New Year.

Step outside with me…

will you?

Do you see the edge…

of the train…

in the lower left corner…

that travels around…

this particular garden?

They have a room…

that is nothing but orchids.

and a design studio...

full of talented folks…

that whip up arrangements…

like this.

I thought…

that this rarely seen…

gold poinsettia…

was beautiful.

These carnations…

weren’t too shabby, either.

Fountains flowed…

it was quiet…

and each employee…

I personally interviewed…

had two words to say…

regarding their job.

Love it.

This tent…

is a genuine piece…

of heaven brought to earth!

Every form of bough…

and wreath…

is offered here.

The scent…

is amazing!

And look…

at this fun pasta…

offered in gourmet foods!

Yes…

it’s quite a haven…

in the middle of urban America.

Across the street…

at Fashion Island…

is Santa’s house.

And a ginormous tree…

that is stunning at night.

Yes…

it was quite a day…

full of lovely.

I’ll have to take you back…

in the spring.

It’s just a beautiful…

just different.

The Christmas tree…

will be down…

but the palm trees won’t.

Just thought I’d clarify.

We leave those up year ’round.

And one last comment.

I don’t make a really great sleuth.

Just imagine me…

in that posh atmosphere…

trying to be discreet…

while snapping photos!

I misplaced my camera case…

which they graciously found.

When I apologized…

they politely stated…

“It’s okay ma’m.

It happens all the time.”

No doubt…

they’ll be ready for me…

when spring comes.

Today…

I visited…

both Wal-Mart…

and Target.

Reality check.

Enjoy your weekend!

Respite and Relaxation

Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!  ~Charles Dickens, The Pickwick Papers, 1836

Back when…

I had a tendency…

to lip off…

(many think I still do…and that’s okay)…

I would tell my mother…

“I will never …

have a child in December.”

I was right.

I had two!

And clearly…

I am a December child myself.

My mother-in-law…

also holds this honor.

Here’s what I have observed.

Son #1 is December 3.

The general sentiment…

at this point in time…

during the month…

is “Let the Good Times Roll!”

People are happy…

they’re festive…

they’re lovin’ the season.

My birthday is the 12th.

A portion of the spirit…

is wearing slightly thin.

People are looking…

at lists of “To Dos”…

that are…

at least a quarter of a mile…

in length.

They’re behind the eight ball…

under the gun…

busy.

Son #3…

was born December 18th.

Yes.

Exactly one week…

out…

from the big day.

If I could do penance…

I would.

Not for the kid…

but for the date.

Just clarifying.

Every year…

my dear…

friend-that-is-like-family…

Vicki…

treats me…

to a lovely outing for a day.

It means the world to me.

She is one…

constantly busy…

lady.

It also…

doesn’t go unnoticed…

that my family…

takes up the slack…

in my absence.

All moms…

need and deserve…

double sided allies…

such as I have.

This year…

we went to Orange County.

You either love it…

or hate it.

I love and adore it.

It is one of my favorite places.

Nestled in…

the hub…

of this bustling county…

is The McCharles Tea House.

This Victorian bungalow was built in 1885.

Audrey and Vivian…

are the lovely owners.

I cannot adequately describe…

their attention to detail…

their hospitality…

their sincerity

their talent…

and their love…

for celebrating life.

They are mother and daughter…

and compliment…

one another beautifully.

Audrey paints…

and within each of her paintings…

are stories…

and memories.

In fact…

as she so aptly pointed out…

most all of our memories…

of Christmas…

are firmly rooted…

in the past.

Vivian…

does the cooking…

and together…

they make…

a heavenly combination!

The grounds are spectacular…

the decorating magical.

I was so blessed…

to sit and visit…

with a friend…

I dearly love

but have limited time with.

I was refreshed…

in both body and spirit…

by delicious food…

and nature’s…

surrounding splendor.

People who strive…

to bring beauty…

to the world and others…

are special, indeed.

I pray…

that this season…

you will experience…

being refreshed…

so that you in turn…

may refresh others!

Mothers…

invest in the future tirelessly…

so that change can occur…

in the world.

It is a high calling.

We went home…

with a beautiful lithograph…

of Audrey’s painting.

It was a lovely gift.

May you gift yourself

with even…

a couple of hours…

for a friend…

or family member…

in order to be refreshed?

Can you celebrate…

the beauty and splendor…

that abounds…

this time of year?

I hope so.

p.s.  don’t forget to comment, as I am giving away a lovely book!  More on that Wednesday.

You can even just say “hi!”

You Are What You Read

I’ve heard…

the above phrase…

so many times.

And I love…

the thought…

in Oliver DeMille’s…

latest article…

that says…

“The truth is that the classics are profound and multi-layered—which means that if we go to them seeking a certain thing, we’ll most likely find it.”

Along with the profound…

sophisticated…

and riveting…

there is always…

just plain funny.

It, too…

can be multi-layered.

The inside jokes…

nuances…

and direct quotes…

from literature…

that can send…

our family…

into hysterical…

peals of laughter…

are numerous indeed.

One of the great things…

about classics…

and the fact…

that they are multi-layered…

is that there is…

such tremendous joy…

in bringing those…

within your family…

that are younger…

into the “inner circle.”

We have had…

so much fun…

this week…

doing just that.

One of our all-time…

holiday favorites…

that we’re up for…

year round…

is…

Barbara Robinson’s…

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

If you haven’t read it…

you simply must.

My heart has…

filled with joy…

as I have read it…

to our two youngest boys…

this past week.

The giggling…

turned into…

robust belly laughs…

the quoting of lines…

and accompanying drama…

by the older three…

were priceless!

Here are a few of our favorite lines.

The opening…

“The Herdmans were absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world.  They lied and stole and hit little kids and cussed their teachers and took the name of the Lord in vain and set fire to Fred Shoemaker’s old broken-down toolhouse.”…

Here are a few more…

“They lived over a garage at the bottom of Sproul Hill.”…

“Where other people had grass in their front yard, the Herdman’s had rocks.”…

“And where other people had hydrangea bushes, the Herdman’s had poison ivy.”…

“There was also a sign in the yard that said “Beware Of The Cat.”…

“It was the meanest looking animal I ever saw…and the mailman wouldn’t deliver anything to the Herdman’s because of it.”

“Alice Wendelkin was so nasty-clean that she had detergent hands by the time she was four years old.”

“My mother’s friend, Miss Philips, was a social-service worker and she tried to get some welfare money for the Herdmans, so Mrs. Herdman could just work one shift and spend more time with her children.  But Mrs. Herdman wouldn’t do it; she liked the work , she said.”

When Mrs. Armstrong…

who practically runs…

the entire church…

has a mishap…

and winds up…

in the hospital…

take The Herdmans…

Alice Wendelkin…

the narrator of our story…

her mother…

and several other characters…

plus one Christmas Pageant…

and rehearsals…

and you have the makings…

of one hilarious book.

As I said…

throughout last week…

the three older boys…

came in and out…

quoted phrases and lines…

verbatim…

and made reading…

such a tremendous pleasure.

One especially fond…

Christmas Memory…

involves a year…

when my brother…

and folks…

came from Seattle…

for the holiday.

We read…

one chapter per day…

during the dinner hour…

up until Christmas.

There are…

after all…

only seven of them…

in this tremendous book.

During the last one…

as I was concluding…

I looked up…

to see tears…

running down the faces…

of several individuals…

at the table…

which you will see…

is a very natural reaction…

when you find out…

how the story ends.

I’m going to sign off now…

and go read…

the final chapter…

once again…

while adding…

two more people…

to the “inner circle.”

What a privilege.

What a pleasure!

Do you…

have holiday favorites…

that you…

simply must read…

each year?

Favorite lines from them?

Please share!

It’s time for a giveaway…

and your comments will count!

Oh How the Years Go By…

Today…

we officially enter…

double digit days…

in December…

and there are only 15…

of them left until Christmas!

Last evening…

I reflected…

upon one holiday specifically.

I had three children.

They were 7, 5 and 2.

Our Christmas tree died.

So…

in between…

everything else I was doing…

I had to remove…

all of the ornaments…

and lights…

drag it through…

the living room…

down the hall…

and out the front door…

to the recycle bin.

Needles abounded.

Three sets of sad…

sorry…

eyes…

watched…

while I fumed.

I was tired.

I had a lot to do.

I thought…

perhaps we might all…

be coming down with something.

Less than 24 hours later…

the flu virus…

hit with a vengeance!

Hero Hubby and I…

“took turns” being “sick”…

while the other guy…

helped…

the three little boys!

We somehow managed…

to get the second tree…

decorated…

only to have it…

die as well!

Fast forward…

to last night.

I had taken…

Son #2…

to the home…

of longtime friends…

so that he could purchase…

his first car!

As I rode home…

alone…

in my Excursion…

made for eight passengers…

I reflected…

on how very quickly…

the years fly by.

In the moment

fifteen years ago…

I often felt…

as if moments were days!

This evening…

I found myself…

alone in a very large vehicle…

yet feeling crowded…

by wonderful memories…

that seem like yesterday.

It became a melancholy time…

when it dawned on me…

that this weekend…

when we will most certainly…

get our tree…

and attend our dojo…

holiday party…

that for the first time ever…

we will not all be together…

at these events.

Commitments…

obligations…

work-related retreats…

all clamor for attention…

and physical presence.

If you are weary…

dear mothers…

and fathers…

please try…

to relish the moments.

Be grateful

for the presence of family…

togetherness…

seemingly insignificant…

events and routines.

All too soon

those “little” children…

will be pursuing…

their dreams…

penning their goals…

taking their place…

in the great conversation.

I’m grateful…

that…

whether they are…

present or not…

I can connect…

through technology…

where they still make me laugh.

Son #1′s Facebook profile…

with the caption…

“You’d better be nice to me…I know people!”

I am privileged…

for the opportunity…

to see them cherish relationships…

with no peer parameters.

Time is fleeting.

A day is coming…

all too quickly…

when I will regularly ride…

and pursue…

things alone.

This year…

take some time…

to be sentimental…

and by all means..

make it a Christmas…

to remember!
