Festival of the Trees: “For the Love of a Child”

November 30th, 2009

Many of you are aware of the fact that our family just hosted a rather large So. Cal. tour for a friend speaking on Ameri ca and principles that are needed to return her to her glory while securing our freedoms.

We had a lot of help from wonderful hosts and it was amazing…

And quite a bit of work…

I’m not complaining…

Just trying to convince you based on today’s post that I’m not completely insane…

At least not just yet…

The tour officially ended Saturday evening in Escondido…

Monday morning found my husband, Sons #1 and #2, and myself at the Riverside Convention Center…

To decorate a tree and fulfill a commitment to charity and our community…

The Festival of the Trees is quite an event.

It benefits the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Riverside Regional Medical Center, our county hospital.

One of the pillars of Leadership Education is Field Experience.

Here is a partial explanation of it: Students seek opportunities outside the classroom where they can serve, learn and generally experience with an eye toward greater understanding of people, organizations, the world and their unique role in it.

I seek permission to digress for a moment…

Many people ask me “what Leadership Education looks like”

Or a personal favorite“How did you get so lucky to have five great kids?”

Here are but two of the overriding objectives for this blog…

1. We would like you to know that we are not extraordinary as far as human capabilities are concerned…

We are, however, diligent…

We have chosen to parent purposefully…

We are far from perfect, but where our children and family are concerned

we intentionally and carefully plan…

2.  With the above in mind, please don’t attribute our children to “luck.”

Moving along…

On top of what this looks like, there seems to be a concern amongst others as to how one would incorporate leadership education objectives with multiple ages…

Excellent question!

The first thing I did, was to approach Son #1, who is a highly creative being…

In many ways…

And a HUGE lover of babies…

I “convinced” him, that yes, he DID need this experience in life, and that the county hospital’s needs were as much his issue as they are mine where responsible citizenship is concerned…

How did I do this?

With a “field trip”, of course!

He attended The Festival of the Trees information meeting with me in September…

I cannot recall what he enjoyed more…

The ER receptionist blowing Bazooka bubbles in his face as a rather impromptu greeting…

Or the profile of “any and all” whose needs are met through county hospital services…

A quick debrief with a couple of minutes for pondering the “success” of preemies advocating for themselves…

and he was “in!”

Now for the family “buy in”

remember, 4 other sons and a large age span…

It’s really pretty simple…

Not to be confused with easy…

Can anyone say age appropriate skills?

DSC02091

Time consuming?…

Yes.

DSC02096

Efficient?

DSC02089

Hardly.

“Messy?”

DSC02088

Well…

Purposeful?…

Rewarding?…

To be continued Wednesday…

Comments?

It’s “Black Friday”…let’s be sensible!

November 27th, 2009

I trust that your Thanksgiving was a wonderful experience, full of fresh new memories made with family and friends.

Today is known in the retail world as BLACK FRIDAY.

2008_12_macys

I used to be quite a shopper…

This “semi-vocation” had family members claiming that I knew the mall directory by heart.

While it was somewhat of an exaggeration, I was “quite familiar” with more than one mall, and didn’t necessarily need to utilize its guide…

Then the vocation of motherhood was added to my plate…

These days, I practically need the help of the directory to simply park AT the mall…

Imagine my absolute shock, if you will, upon viewing more than one commercial today,

joyously announcing the opening of several major department stores at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow!

Is this supposed to be in the name of convenience?!…

If so, I’m surely missing the “perks!”

I know how long it takes me to get ready to go…( yes, I’m fully and somewhat painfully aware that that is, indeed, a personal choice.)

I just can’t imagine anything…(and I DO include my MAC makeup obsession hobby in this category),

worth rising at 2:30 a.m. to purchase…

I’m  personally factoring in the “get ready” time as well…

This holiday season, why not consider either purchasing or asking for at least a couple of gifts that make “perfect” sense?!…

Don’t get me wrong…I’m all for festivities at the holidays, and love to both give and receive!…

But in the spirit of less clutter more meaning

Why not take advantage of some savings that will not only benefit you if you act upon them by December 31st; but allow you to reap continuous personal growth and development?

The FATJEF is coming into its fourth year.

It is a great opportunity to build community and hear fantastic speakers on a variety of topics pertaining to leadership and its educational methodologies.

If you register and pay by December 31st, you can do it for:

$45.00 person

$75.00 couple

$30.00 per scholar-age youth

This includes your lunch!

Not only is this a great deal, it builds on your commitment to leadership and excellence. You can’t go wrong…

Nor can any well meaning gift giver that is perhaps otherwise “clueless” in the gift-giving department!

The FATJEF will be held in Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday, April 24, 2010…

It will be at The Goldy S. Lewis Community Center at 11200 Baseline Road…

After Jan. 1, 2010, there will be a price increase.

This year promises to be the best yet!…

Amazing presenters are lined up!…

The concurrent youth conference is always an incredible experience…

We will be spotlighting several presenters here on TommyMom so that you “hear it here first!”…

And of course, so you can make an informed decision about attending as well…

Just think…you can hit the snooze button and give yourself a gift right now….

Extra sleep!…

I’m in!

Let the season begin!….

Happy rest-of-the-Thanksgiving-weekend to you and yours!

Stay tuned!…

More FATJEF details to follow…

Are you ready to  begin”chatting” next week?…

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 25th, 2009

I read a great quote today that I would like to share with you.

It is simple, yet powerful in its declaration…

I hope that as you celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, you will consider the message and determine if there is anything in your own thought processes that possibly needs to be adjusted…

“Gratitude defends: just fifteen minutes a day focusing on the things you’re grateful for will significantly increase your antibodies!”

IMG_0430

With the past 10 day TJEd 1,000,000 tour, as well as other commitments, it seems as if Thanksgiving snuck up on me

I hope that your holiday is lovely, and rich with opportunities for meaningful dialogue

IMG_0429

Memorable experiences

And that it is full of defense.

a special thank you to the young Master Mancuso, age 7,  for providing me with awesome “Pilgrim People…and the attention to detail in giving the Pilgrim Lady pearls…now there’s a man to admire!”

TJEd 1,000,000 exceeds initial expectations!

November 23rd, 2009

We did it! Southern California ROCKS!

For the past ten days, Dr. Shanon Brooks has been taking Southern California by storm, with the powerful message of the first ever TJEd 1,000,000 “tour”.

Shanon

Yesterday was the conclusion, and here are the results:

The message of TJEd 1,000,000 was presented to 888 people…

Over 100 libraries were placed in homes…

Hundreds of individual books were purchased…

By the time Dr. Brooks arrives at home, 2800 miles will have been traveled…

The response was overwhelming!

People have consistently asked “when we will do this again”…

January 201o, is looking to be the answer!…

More details will follow soon…

But now, we would like to thank the following people, whose combined efforts and vision made this such a huge success!

Tami Clinger and Gale da Rosa

Alysa Whitlock and Stephanie Howells-Scoville

Pamela Duvall

Matt and Diana Sanders

Deena Ortiz and Angela Ward

Dana Palmer and Jean Arnott

Willard and Amber Snow

Joelle Mancuso and Shawn Crane

Emily Beeli

Randy and Ruth Lawrence

Sheila Edmonds

Cydne Norris

Mikki Cabrera

Colleen Willard and Heidi Christianson

Joana Johnson

DaNell Friebe

Without you, we couldn’t have achieved these amazing results!

We thank you, we appreciate and applaud you for moving the cause of liberty!

We would love to hear from those of you that attended in the comments section of this post.

Just a reminder that starting next week…

we will be using a random generator

to give out weekly “fabulous prizes”…

to those individuals that choose to leave comments under the Monday, Wednesday, Friday posts!

Why not begin practicing now?

Hope you win!

What are you thankful for?…Raise your voices and sound off!

November 20th, 2009

On Monday, TJEd 1,000,000 was in Thousand Oaks, Ca. It was a beautiful and very productive evening.

The Mancuso Family hosted us in their home for the night as well.

IMG_0443

It was a lovely and wonderful experience.

I love to go into the homes of families practicing TJEd…

It is inspiring, infuses one with hope, and serves to give affirmation at the grass roots level; that there are families in America taking responsibility for furthering the cause of liberty and freedom through education.

There are still others that would really like to know what this looks like on a daily basis.

In its purest form, TJEd is very organic…

Read Leadership Education by Oliver and Rachel DeMille to gain further insight.

It can be used with any educational or life model.

It is principle based, not “forms” driven.

You don’t have to belong to a club, organization, or institution to “qualify.”

You simply take the principles and begin…with you, not them.

Throughout history, millions have done just that…

With amazing results…

I loved this simple, yet effective wall in the Mancusos kitchen area.

IMG_0428

The written word is powerful affirmation.

And coupling words with pending holidays is quite an affirming visual for people.

The turkeys are the Mancuso children’s hands. I ask you, how cute is that?

I also took some pictures for you of the kitchen island…pilgrims, pumpkins, the Declaration of Independence… visual affirmations of values being communicated in core and love of learning.

IMG_0440

IMG_0441

IMG_0444

These are phases of learning that we continue to build on throughout our lives.

I know that I seized the moment to add my turkey to the wall!

What are you thankful for?…

Perhaps some visual affirmation would be in order?…

It is my desire that this blog community would be a place to lend your comments…

We benefit from the diversity and perspective of others…

I invite you to sound off!…

Of course, fabulous prizes often help!…

Starting the week after Thanksgiving, in celebration of the upcoming holiday season, there will be one prize a week given to a lucky TommyMom reader!

All you have to do is read and comment!…

It’s like Christmas and Hanukkah coming to your door!…

A random generator will pick one of the comment numbers, and that individual will become the lucky recipient of the featured prize!…

Be sure and sound off!…

Tune in Monday to see the results of the first TJEd 1,000,000 tour with Dr. Brooks!

Sweep the Leg…

Sons 1-5

Sons 1-5

Robert Kiyosaki mentions in his Rich Dad, Poor Dad series how the poor teach their kids to join football or basketball teams; the wealthy, golf or tennis.  It is conveyor belt versus leadership all over again–employee training sports versus individualized, mentored leadership athletics. Of course teamwork is also valuable, but you can learn teamwork just as well in swimming, tennis, golf, and martial arts. The same lessons apply to other facets of our social life and activities. Baseball was Oliver’s love from ages eight to sixteen. His coaches and teammates were among his best friends and most influential mentors. He would not change that experience for anything. When our children came of baseball age, we took them to a baseball park to watch a game, and also to a martial arts studio to watch a practice. They enjoyed both, but we noticed the tension of  parents arguing at the baseball game versus the order and safety of the dojo. It was ironic, but more importantly, it was a powerful lesson in leadership.” ~ Leadership Education, Oliver and Rachel DeMille

I would like to tell you that we were naturally insightful and discerning in applying the above suggestions, but that is not the case.

The quote and its source book hadn’t yet been written.

We HAD however, along with MILLIONS of other Americans, watched “The Karate Kid.”

What is highlighted in blue and red was the real scenario.

Almost verbatim.

Arguing parents…

Tensions running high…

Competition that was over the top…

“Athletes” in tears…

Did I mention that the “athletes” were 5?

I should point out two things…

1. The above quote “When our children became of baseball age..” would’ve been a profound consideration.

Son #1 was the lucky individual that was then 5.

I have still not ruled out the possibility that child #1 is merely a parental test lab for life’s situations.

2. I know several individuals in team sport coaching positions that are life changing individuals.

I plan on featuring some of them on this blog.

They mentor in extraordinary ways.

Clearly, for our family, martial arts became the choice.

More details will follow later…

November 13th was a banner day!

Son #2 tested for his second degree black belt.

DSC02060

Where the physical and mental training are concerned, the test has gone on for quite some time…

Four months…

Two hours a day…

In addition to the “regular weekly workout-at-the-dojo” schedule.

Faithfulness…

Mental and physical acuity and self-discipline…

Stamina…

Strength…

Fortitude…

Courage…

All of these and more are the rewards of the diligent.

Son #2 and dear friend with "Hanshi"

Son #2 and dear friend, with "Hanshi"

Son #2 and Sensei, a powerful mentor

Son #2 and Sensei, a powerful mentor

Diligent accurately describes Son #2.

DSC02066

Karate, along with life lessons and Leadership Education, have taught him to always remember those that have mentored powerfully and well along the way to a goal…

#2 and Kelle, who taught you to respect and love martial arts when you were young

#2 and Kelle, who taught you to respect and love martial arts when you were young

Sons #1 and #2...BEST FRIENDS.

Sons #1 and #2...BEST FRIENDS.

To rejoice in the fact that great mentors and examples can also be family…and when they are, one is most fortunate.

Sons #1 and #2, with Kelle, one of your biggest supporters over the years

Sons #1 and #2, with Kelle, one of your biggest supporters over the years

That mentors may take a lesser role, but never a lesser influence…

And at the end of the day, you can rejoice in a goal achieved…

Watch “The Karate Kid” to celebrate and check for tips…just in case…

And to laugh hysterically at this video…

Just for fun…

For many people, one of the more  daunting issues in pursuing Leadership Education, is the realization that they don’t know what it “looks like.”

One of my intentions on this blog, is to make an honest attempt at marrying the “lofty, intellectual, and historical” with the “present day, how-do-I-do-this-and-what-does-it-look-like?” needs that everyday life presents in a “modern” culture.

I trust that this aspiration will work…

even though I will certainly have a need to readily acknowledge error from time to time.

In attempting the lofty pursuit of marrying these two worlds, I think that, as a mom, “Tommy” is more appropriate than “Thomas.”

Unless I were to become irritated, even angry with him…

Which is entirely possible in Leadership Education when attempting to dialogue with the greats.

But hey…

The fruit is on the tree.

He created the masterpiece of his life, the Declaration of Independence, at the young age of 33…

Served as governor of war-torn Virginia and once escaped British capture by only minutes…

Was one of the geniuses behind the American Constitution, even though he was serving in France during the Constitutional Convention…

Was a true Renaissance man, skilled in farming, scientific experimentation, practical invention, economics, political philosophy, and statesmanship…

“Tommy”…

A “nickname” for the greatness of “Thomas.”

I am a mom.

I can change the world from home…

Which has many given nicknames…”Pad”, “Crib,”Cave,” “Dump,” “Joint,” “Nest”…

None of which signify the true meaning of the word and its powerful ability to influence others from the grass roots level.

Then, to influence the culture…

And the country…

And the world…

“Tommy” indicates endearment…

Familiarity…

Perhaps, because he is the most prolific example of the outcome of a Leadership Education, I should be really familiar with Thomas…

Jefferson…

not one of his most famous...but I love this "GQ" look!

a very "GQ" look

I should speak with endearment…

With a familiar tone…

As if we’re on a first name basis…

Like I know him and the essence of his being…

It’s something I’m working on every day in my own educational pursuits…

I want to respect, revere, admire…

Without huge formalities…

Because then, I really know…

I am a momto five boyseach of which could be the next “Tommy”…

How about you?

We’re on the move!

November 13th, 2009

Day One of the TJEd 1,000,000 tour has come to an end.

So far, so good amazing!

Two hundred and seventy-four people attended the three events of the day.

All walks of life.

Plurality. Of faith, of worldview, of political leanings.

Lots of TJEd libraries in homes.

I love America.

I especially love that this “tour,” which is so impactive in its message, and relevant to all Americans,

began on a day as significant as Veteran’s Day.

Perhaps this trio of photos, drawn by a young, upcoming statesman, of which I’m particularly fond ( son #1),

will more accurately portray the overall sentiment of each and every meeting.IMG_0417

No doubt about it.

There is power in the people.

And history has proven that in an informed citizenry, it is virtually unstoppable.IMG_0422

Leadership.

Education.

As opposed to following and “schooling.”

It can be practiced in every educational “form.”

Is individualized.

Won’t ever appeal to the masses.

Life changing.

Student directed.

Power.

Of, by, for, and to…the people.

Catch the whirl.

Dr. Brooks is coming to a location near you…you don’t want to miss it.

IMG_0420

If  you’ve been, care to  share your comments? We’d love to hear from you!

Let the Tour Begin!

November 11th, 2009

Today is the much anticipated beginning of the TJEd 1,000,000 tour!

The goal: To have the TJEd library in 1,000,000 homes in the next five years.

Why?

Because liberty matters.

Freedom is precious.

America is still the best experiment in government to have come along in the history of the world.

At least in my opinion…which isn’t always so humble.

It is my sincere hope that those of you fortunate enough to live within a reasonable distance of this tour, will take advantage of the opportunity to attend one of the events listed.

Because we can all benefit from the challenging reminder that freedom isn’t free.

Bring your family.

Tell your friends.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Just who IS Dr. Shanon Brooks?

November 9th, 2009

Dr. Shanon Brooks is coming to Southern California on Monday.

GW-0156

He begins, what we refer to in our house, as a “whirlwind tour” on Wednesday, November 11.

It lasts until Saturday, November 21.

With multiple appearances each day.

That’s a lot of whirling.

Trust me on this.

He will be speaking about teaching vs. educating, the tenants of freedom and how to perpetuate them, what an American is,  and a lot of other really interesting things.

You’re going to have to trust me on this as well.

You won’t be nodding off or fighting sleep.

But since I’ve already been privileged to hear portions of both lectures, I am speaking with confidence.

Listening to him beats watching television

Any day.

I’m hoping that you’re hanging on every word today, as the members of our family consider themselves to be extremely fortunate to be associated with Dr. Brooks and his family.

He’s the “lucky” winner of the first profile spot on Tommymom.com!

I’m not certain he and I are sharing the “lucky” sentiment.

You may hold your applause for later. Possibly until after you’ve heard him yourself.

Because of his near rock star fame…okay, that could be a slight exaggeration…

Several of you are asking, “Just who IS Dr. Shanon Brooks… really?

I, Tommymom moderator, and personal friend, am going to attempt to answer this now-pressing question for all of you. Hey, it’s a rough job, but someone’s got to do it.

1.  He’s a fabulous, over-the-top, excellent, hard-to-exceed-this-level-of-commitment, mentor.

DSC02508

Who gets pretty passionate about the principles he’s sharing

Or, it could be that seriously green wall that’s doing something in this particular case…

In any regard, he’s somewhat rare, in that he’s not only broad-based in his acquisition of knowledge, but is also deep.

A true leadership education, by the way.

Don’t try this at home. He would actually love for  you to experience the opportunity of  acquiring this type of knowledge from home, and mentors classes where you can do it!

Please click on the Face to Face With Greatness button on this website for further reference.  Just understand that his website is currently under construction…

You won’t be bonding with these people from “the dental office” much longer…pardon our virtual dust…

FABULOUS things to come

Shanon’s been studying and when I called, Bill Gate’s line was busy.

Sons #1 and #2 are two of the fortunate mentees. They think he’s the “BOMB”.

Do you see the beauty in this? They are often the slang, pop cultural balance to his PhD in Constitutional Law...along with the other two degrees he’s sporting.

Just a quick inquisition…

When was the last time you even read The Constitution, much less acquired a PhD in its “law”?

Exactly.

Moving right along…

DSC02596

Did I mention he is passionate about mentoring and the entire learning process?

I love, love, love to dialogue with him.

My husband claims that when he and I do this, people are often running for cover… Perhaps a slight misunderstanding on my husband’s part.

You will always know where you stand with Dr. Brooks.

And he will always stand.

GW-0074

For a return to the American tradition of loving marriages.

DSC02572

For families.

He and his wife, Julia, have six beautiful children. Guess what? They’re all being mentored in the style of a Leadership Education. Shocking, eh? I mean, who does this guy think he is;

GW-0600

practicing what he preaches?  There has simply got to be something wrong with him!

He’s committed.

DSC02745

To old fashioned values and principles.  He’s seen here “going to see a man about a horse.”

Scratch that.  He’s ON the horse…

In the great outdoors; of which he is an avid fan.

He farms.

He does manual labor.

For real.

He’s deeply committed to friendship…

GW-0278

With the man who wrote this book and has personally mentored Shanon for over 20 years.

Wow.

He puts his money where his mouth is, by rising insanely early each and every day, to study the principles of this country.

And what it took to make it great.

And what it will take for all of us to continue to enjoy our freedoms.

Never mind about the thousands of great classics he has read and studied from the world over.

Is he for real?

Painfully so, at times.

But I love him for it.  The honesty can be somewhat brutal where I am personally concerned, but I know that I am always the better for it.

And it’s always done in love.

You won’t walk away unchanged. His love for this country and people would be hard to parallel.

After all, look what he is doing for us.

Whirling.

For 10 days.

Is he for real?

I don’t know.

You be the judge.

Photo 7

Perhaps he simply walks amongst us.

Photo 6

Right now, I can type this with confidence, because his hands are at “10 and 2″, as he drives here to serve me and you; and he knows nothing about these “slightly irreverent” pictures.

I feel a “dialogue” coming on!

Hope you make the effort to catch a “whirl”….I promise you’ll never be the same!
