Creatively Celebrating Heros

“Mom, I want to take you to an amazing place.”

We were visiting Son #1 Saturday.

Firehouse Subs was started by…

well, Firemen.

The menu board reads in vernacular…

of your local station.

The combinations…

all appeared to be divine.

Exercising prudence…

I chose one.

It did not disappoint.

The hot is hot…

the cold condiments…

behave nicely…

in their designated temperatures as well.

The decor is “stationey.”

Yes, that’s a viable word in my world.

From genuine “engine medal”…

to ladders, current community…

as well as vintage photos…

and Dalmation tables…

this place rocked it!

As you check out…

they ask you kindly…

“Round up, sir?”

All extra change…

and money from pickle buckets…

goes to further the legacy of service…

firemen build within our communities.

My favorite parts?

Well, the sub was heavenly.

They steam them…

so the bread is honestly…

the lightest, crispiest…

delight I’ve experienced in a long time.

And your drink cup…

highlights a hometown hero…

or a pickle bucket recipient.

My hometown hero profile…

caused me to get rather choked up.

Kids were swimming.

Kyle decided he wanted…

to be in the deep end…

“like the big kids.”

Off came his floaties…

and down to the bottom…

of the pool sank Kyle…

until Tyler…

who was 11…

and the son of a firefighter…

saw him through his goggles.

Down he went…

never giving a second thought…

to his own risk.

He hoisted Kyle to the top…

got him out of the pool…

and began administering CPR…

taught to him by his father.

He saved Kyle’s life.

His story saves faith.

In humanity…

and selfless sacrifice…

that goes on quietly…

and continuously…

each and every day in America…

offered by community service individuals.

On one wall of this little restaurant…

is this poignant and timeless mural.

Rather apropos…

since this is Colorado Springs last evening.

Please remember our firefighters…

and community service members in prayer today.

And when you’re asked a seemingly small question…

“Round up, Sir, Ma’m?”…

Please say yes.

Seemingly small things…

produce huge results.

United We Stand.

What an awesome idea! We have to go there and bring plenty of change for the bucket! Those fires are hideous monsters and we definitely need to Pray for the firefighters and residents being affected. Thanks for sharing this place with us.
